Marcus Fenix is familiar as a survivor. Players have followed him through a world already shaped by war, devastation and years of fighting against the Locust.

E-Day begins before that reality has fully taken hold. The streets of Kalona still resemble a functioning city, and the people living there have no clear understanding of the creatures preparing to emerge beneath them.

The Coalition has set the story fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It brings Marcus and Dominic Santiago together at a point when the catastrophe defining their lives is only beginning.

A friendship before the legend

The relationship between Marcus and Dom has long provided the emotional foundation of Gears of War. The series is known for violent encounters and heavily armored soldiers, but much of its dramatic identity comes from loss, loyalty and the bonds between people fighting together.

E-Day revisits that connection from an earlier perspective. Its characters have not yet experienced the full consequences of the Locust conflict, even though returning players already know something about the future awaiting them.

That difference between the characters' knowledge and the audience's memory creates an unusual opportunity for the prequel. Events that seem uncertain to Marcus and Dom can carry additional meaning for those familiar with the original trilogy.

The horror of the first invasion

The Coalition has emphasized the fear associated with encountering the Locust for the first time. Rather than treating them as established battlefield opponents, E-Day introduces the creatures as a terrifying and unfamiliar presence.

Kalona is central to that presentation. Its streets, neighborhoods and recognizable urban spaces become combat zones during the sudden invasion.

The destruction gives the story a different atmosphere from the later games. Instead of exploring the aftermath of a conflict, players witness the process through which ordinary locations become ruins.

Unreal Engine 5 supports the rebuilt environments, lighting and visual effects. These technical changes serve an artistic purpose: making the collapse of a recognizable city feel immediate.

Familiar enemies are also presented differently when the protagonists have not yet learned how to confront them. The prequel can restore some uncertainty to creatures whose abilities longtime fans already understand.

Cooperation remains part of the story

The campaign supports solo play and cooperative options, including two-player split-screen on Xbox consoles. The focus on Marcus and Dom gives this familiar feature a direct connection to the narrative.

Beyond the campaign, Horde Siege introduces twelve-player cooperative battles across larger urban maps. Three squads of four participants work through objectives while confronting the Locust threat.

Traditional competitive multiplayer also returns through Versus, which has received ranked playlists as part of the game's first post-launch updates.

A significant release for Xbox

Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, following a five-day early-access period for eligible Premium Edition players.

The game is available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam. Microsoft also provides access through eligible Game Pass subscriptions, with Xbox Play Anywhere support for compatible digital purchases.

The Coalition has already released several post-launch fixes. An October 14 patch addresses campaign progression, cooperative play, memory-related problems and competitive matchmaking placements.

For the franchise itself, E-Day represents a deliberate return to an earlier dramatic foundation. Marcus and Dom are not yet the hardened survivors who define the original games. Their friendship is being tested at the moment their world begins to disappear.
